How to Use Article Writing to Increase Your SEO

October 26th, 2008

Are you trying to attract search engine traffic to your website through article writing? Then, let me share with you some tips that you can use to make this task targeted and a lot easier for you.

1. Start with keywords. The best way to impress the search engines is to make your articles keyword-rich. So, before you tap on your key board, get to know the popular search terms within your chosen niche. You will need to include these terms all throughout your content so your articles will fare well on relevant searches. You will also need to learn the Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI technique) or the process being used by search spiders in analyzing relationship between your targeted keywords and your article content. Your articles will most likely to appear on the top 10 search page results if you use words that are synonyms to your main keywords. Also, don’t forget to count the number of search terms you use to make sure that you will not exceed the acceptable keyword density which is 3% of your total article word count.

2. Build inbound links for your website. Distributing your articles on various publishing sites is currently the best way to generate inbound links for your website. As you know, this is one of the most effective ways to improve your page ranking. Ensure that you use as much hyperlinks (that will take your readers to your website or to your squeeze page) as possible on your resource box or article body (if you are posting your articles on your blog and relevant forums) to boost the number of your backlinks.

3. Learn how to use relevant HTML codes. You can’t just post your articles on your website or on your blog. If you want to help the search spiders in analyzing your content, you must use relevant HTML codes on your articles. Don’t know how to use HTML codes? No need to worry as there are various resources (ebooks, videos, audio, and even articles) that are available online. You don’t have to be computer savvy to learn the trick. In fact, all you need to do is perform a Google search and enter HTML codes tutorials and you’ll surely be able to get all the kind of information you need. If you are a visual learner, you may opt to find relevant information on YouTube.

How to Use the Google Keyword Tool

October 16th, 2008

I will go into the details of how to use this tool to start generating titles that make your topics profitable and optimized for maximum exposure.

Set It Up For The Proper Language

One of the first things you should do is to set up the tool for whatever country and language your major audience happens to be. You can find out what your biggest audience is regionally by checking the administrative panel of your website for the makeup of countries visiting your site. This is important, even for all English language sites because even English is spoken differently around the world. People in the UK will visit a site and see different spellings and instead of realizing that you are an American company, they might think you are just not a very good speller, and thus unprofessional. So, try to suit the tool to the language you want to highlight most.

At the very top of the tool you will see a sentence that says: “Results are tailored to English, United States.” There is a link next to that that simply says, “Edit.” Choose the link and change the main language and country, if necessary.

Search Descriptive Words Or Phrases

The tool can search three different ways, based on a keyword or phrase, based on a URL, or based on some content. For this section, we’ll concentrate on choosing to search by descriptive words or phrases by making sure that radio button is selected. Next, you want to enter the word or phrase that you’ve brainstormed to start the process of finding other ideas or words that might work for you. You will need to type in the letters in the capcha facility that keeps spammers off the site, but it doesn’t do anything to your search results.

After you get the results back, you can search through the list and look at the competition for the keyword or phrase, the approximate search volume for the month, and the average search volume. In general, what you want to find is a word that has a low level of competition with a high search volume. Of course, that’s nearly impossible to find these days as advertisers are very savvy. But, you can at least get a good idea of which ones are worth trying to use. If you use something with a high advertiser’s competition value and a high search volume, the odds of being in the top search results are practically non-existent because major players are hogging the traffic on those.

There are other search metrics that you can add to your list after it is generated. You have to use the drop-down box that says,”Choose columns to display” to add other columns. One other column that is great to see in the results list is Estimated Avg. CPC, which gives you an idea of the payout associated with the keyword or phrase in the Google Adwords system. Using low competition words with high CPC values is one way to generate more Google Adwords dollars on your own sites, as SEO articles will cue the Google server to serve up ads related to what’s on your page. If it sees high-paying words, the ads served that people can have the opportunity to click are often also high-paying ads.

If you find some additional keywords in the results that lead you to new keywords, don’t be afraid to pull them out of the list and run them alone in the Keyword Tool to see what comes up. You will find this helps you to brainstorm different ways to find words for your topic title that are going to bring in traffic and money to your sites.

Search Web Page URL

Another way to use the Keyword Tool to analyze the keywords being use on another web page. This is a great way to generate keywords off competitor’s sites without too much effort. If you know of sites similar to your own that are already doing a great job attracting traffic, then you should use this tool to find out what keywords they are using.

The way you do that is to switch the radio button from descriptive words or phrases to “website content.” It will then return a results list that will be sorted in groups by whatever the major keyword or phrase used happens to be. This is a very easy way to get a list of usable keywords, but do realize that keywords campaign change frequently as new trends are identified.

Generate Keywords For Already Written Articles

Maybe you’ve written articles already, but they’re not generating much attention. You can still use the tool to help you optimize the articles and change the titles. All you do is choose the “website content” radio button and use the link under the box for the URL to add your text into a box instead. Then, the tool will go through the topic and suggest keywords to use in it. All you have to do is change some words here and there and add a different title to get these stale articles to become stars in your writing lineup.

Simple and Advanced SEO Tips

October 11th, 2008

The SEO hints and tips you find here will not only show you how to optimize a web page properly, but also get you high Google listings and masses of free traffic. That is worth every penny you might spend on the right information.

You no doubt understand all the basic stuff, but in case you are new to this, let’s first have look at these basic SEO hints and tips, since many seem to omit them from their web pages. The most important are the HTML tags that are used by search engines to determine the relevance of your page to the search term used by the search engine’s customer.

Note the term ‘web page’, because many people don’t realize that Google, along with most other search engines, doesn’t list websites, but individual web pages. You have to understand how search engines calculate your listings if you are to understand how to optimize a web page.

I am going to refer to Google, not only because it is the biggest of the search engines, but also to save the bother of referring to search engines all the time. I will refer to Google, but what applies to them also applies to the rest. Here are the main SEO basics:

a) The TITLE tag. This appears in the HEAD portion of your html, and is not actually seen by your visitors but is the most important tag on your web page because the spiders place very high weight to it. Use your main keywords here, and also any other text that will inform Google of the theme of your web page.

b) Heading (H) tags. Your page title should be placed within H1 tags, and should contain the same major keyword as you used in the TITLE tag. Any subheadings should be contained within H2 tags. I don’t use any of the lower tags, from H3 down, except perhaps H3 very occasionally. Google will regard any text with H tags as being important, with most weight given to the lower numbers. However, if you place everything in H1 tags, that will dilute its importance on your page and defeat the object.

c) Text enhancements: Use bold, italic and underline enhancements sparingly, and where you one again want to stress the importance of certain keywords.

d) Your keyword density should be concentrated in the first third of your web page. Don’t use too many: I get good results with under 1% overall keyword density, but using the main keyword in the first 100 characters, once in the last paragraph and once more each 300 words but concentrated in the first third of the page. Thus, an 800 word page will have the keyword three times in the first 250 words and once in the last paragraph.

e) Meta tags: the only meta tag worth using is the description tag, which is used by most search engines in the description of your web page in their listings. Google mainly uses it exactly as you write it. The keyword tag can also be used, but few search engines are thought to use it: Google does not. Any other meta tags are a waste of your space. Anybody that claims differently is wanting to sell you something.

These are the basic hints on SEO, now here are some of the more advanced SEO hints and tips that will teach you not only how to optimize a web page, but to understand the way that search engines work. These are less obvious, and generally not used by beginners to search engine marketing.

f) Use text links to other pages on your website. Search engine spiders love text, and fancy graphics or java links might look great, but don’t get you kudos from the spiders. Stick to text if you want a good listing: there’s no point in fancy graphical links if you have no visitors to use them.

g) Try to use as much text as possible, and as little code as possible. Your code to text ratio should be minimized as far as possible because . . . yes, you’ve got it! Spiders love text!

h) Another useful SEO tip is to maximise your off page linking strategy. It is possible to get a #1 spot on Google with no content: just loads of links coming into your web page from other websites. Not just any websites, but authority sites, so reciprocal links to and from web pages not directly related to your niche are a waste of time, and can even harm you. Link farms can positively damage you.

i) Use anchor text for your links where at all possible. Google shouldn’t have to work out what your web page is about: tell them. Hyperlink your keyword to your website, but don’t use the same form of keyword from every webpage linking to yours. Mix them about so as to keep the links fresh.

j) And lastly: keep adding pages to your website. A single website containing 80 pages will likly provide you with more visitors that two of 40 pages due to a higher overall Google listing from the former as compared to both of the 40 page sites. Refresh your content frequently by adding new pages, but don’t ignore your older pages: rdevise these now and again with new vocabulary. Google detests stagnation.

These are just a few SEO hints and tips that can teach you how to optimize a web page. There are many, many more. Some quite basic, others very much more advanced than the above. However, you can’t get everything free!

Ways to Succeed on StumbleUpon

October 8th, 2008

Best Practices For StumbleUpon

You can find some great online resources with SU advice, but here are my personal recommendations:

  • Don’t just vote for your stuff. When I started, I was thumbing up my own work only. This must be a big no-no because I received almost no traffic with this method.
  • Get involved in the community. Duh, I should have known this one. The more friends I made, the better recommended pages were for me and the more eyeballs who would see my posts.
  • At high tide, all ships rise. Like all good web 2.0 tools, this is an “and” economy. Your posts don’t suffer because you thumb up someone else’s. Give thumbs up to authors you trust and SU seems to give you more props for knowing good content.
  • Don’t be a pimp. I don’t stumble all of my posts. I wait until someone else does (which seems to give more stumble-juice) or I only thumb up my best material. This seems to give more “weight” to the ones I do choose.
  • The more you give, you more you get. SU has given me another opportunity to connect with some of the brightest folks I’ve ever met. Don’t try to game the system - you will receive as much or more than you invest into it.
  • Notice what’s not on that list of referrals at the top? Most of the other social voting/referral sites. Here is my run-down on some of the more prominent ones in this space. (This is just what I have personally observed. If you’ve had success with these, more power to ya.)

Digg

I have only had a few articles go into the double digits of diggs. But even with those, I never garnered much traffic at all. Granted, I also have not put in the time to become a top digger, either.

Tech stories, great headlines, and lad humor seem to do well on digg; the blogging, writing, social media, marketing space…not so much. That’s why I don’t bother with digg.

Sphinn

Have you ever had a cat who vomited randomly in a hidden corner of the house and then, days afterwards, you are searching down the smell, trying to figure out where it’s coming from? This is how I feel about Sphinn.

I do not have anything against the site or the folks on it. But it’s strange that the articles that do the best are often of the questionable, SEO nature. Or that people who “sphinn” my stuff are those who have just published (indicating to me that they want a return sphinn). Or the lack of useful conversation. It just doesn’t feel right, you know?

I have had a little success pulling traffic from Sphinn postings (always less than 10 people on any given day), so I have not abandoned the method, but I decided to put my efforts elsewhere.

Mixx, PlugIM, BizSugar

The returns simply have not matched the effort. I have to go to the site to participate (rather than through a toolbar like SU) and I just don’t have the time. My initial efforts did not make a ripple in my traffic and I don’t visit much.

That said, you will notice Mixx.com on the list above. A friend recommended one of my articles and he must have had some referral power because I got some traffic on that day. However, on my own, I just don’t have the friends, juice, or time.

So, StumbleUpon It Is?

Well, it is for me. My main piece of advice, however, would be to choose a network and commit to it. Joining a half-dozen social voting sites will dilute your efforts. I guarantee you will get more traffic by working through just one or two voting networks.

And SU is not perfect. As I mentioned on Chris’ post, I think the quality of traffic is much lower. People tend to bounce from one site to another. (I can tell because I convert a much lower percentage to subscribers and they generally do not click around the site to other posts.)

However, the truth remains that higher traffic is better than lower traffic, of course. With more visitors comes more chance of being linked to from another blog, getting a mention on Twitter, or of getting another thumbs up on SU.

How to make new websites rank in Google

October 5th, 2008

Ok so you bought a very nice domain, hired a writer (or wrote your own articles), downloaded a nice wordpress theme. Posted the content and did some promotion and after 1 month, didn’t saw any of your article ranking for any of the keywords. Now what ?

This question of “How to make new websites rank in Google” is often get asked in forums with no definite reply. Yes there is a sandbox filter and it can easily take you 3 months to 6 months to see your site in Google serps. But if you are in a competitive niche and are not looking to add fresh content or getting backlinks, the chances are, you will never be seen in Google at all.

In this article, let me talk about How you can make new websites rank in Google as early as possible. Remember, there is no silver bullet but you can always do things to help yourself.

1. Try to get a unique theme - Try to avoid using a theme which is being used by 10,000 other people. If you really want to use it, hack it a little to make it look custom. Its always nice to start with uniqueness.

2. Avoid bad practices like keyword stuffing and H2 tag spamming - You really don’t want to start with a site with high keyword density and way too much meta tags and H2,H3 tags. This will immediately land the site into trouble. Avoid doing such things until the site gets established.

3. Start building links from Day 1 - Do not wait and start building links from Day 1. Shoot an article in ezinearticles.com and may be submit to other article directories. Start using your site as signature in forums. Link it from your old wordpress/blogspot blogs.

4. Get links from Authority website - There is nothing wrong in buying couple of really good authority links to get things moving. Do not just buy it for link value but for traffic value too. Ideally instead of burning $50,you should try to find a friend who can link from his established site to yours.

5. Get into Good Neighborhood - Never get your site into bad neighborhood. Always make sure you re linking to good sites and getting links from good sites only.

6. Keep on adding fresh and New unique content - Initially you want to keep a good pace of adding fresh content. Add daily an article to make googlebot feel that your site is worthy enough.

7. Keep building links on daily basis - Try to get a good 1 link every day. There are tons of ways of getting backlinks.

8. Diversify your links - Try to get links from various sources. Its fine if its from some blog comment or a forum or a pligg site. Everything gets counted and will give you site a good firm base.

9. Build Quality pages so others too link to it - Always try to build high quality pages initially. This is a must as you are looking to build links from those pages as well as expecting others to link them too.

10. Concentrate on each Page to make it rank - Probably the most important Point. Try to make sure, each page rank for its keyword as you don’t want to get all the links to homepage. Getting links to internal page is what going to make your pages start ranking in serps.

4 Ways to Achieve Top Ranking in Search Engines

September 6th, 2008

Do you have a website or blog that needs more traffic? One way to do that is to receive organic traffic by ranking high in the search engines! Let’s take a look at 3 ways you can achieve top ranking in the search engines and enjoy the benefits of the traffic that comes from it.

1. Right now, search engines love blogs. If you don’t have a blog you need to start one! like this Webmaster Blog  Once you have your blog set up, you need to put together a keyword list and post them at around keywords that relate to the theme of your blog.

2. Another way to achieve top ranking in search engines is to hyperlink keyword phrases, back to targeted website pages. Google in particular puts a lot of emphasis on hyperlinked keyword phrases. You can find your way on the top pages of Google just by getting more back links that are hyperlinked to a specific phrase.

3. Speaking of back links if you want your website to rank high on the search engines you need a lot of links pointing back to it. Therefore it is important that you concentrate on one way back links as opposed to doing reciprocal linking.

You can achieve excellent search engine rankings by getting quality back links to your site. This can be done in a variety of ways including article marketing, forum marketing, classified advertising, submitting your site to search engines, submitting to web directories like this web directory and so on.

4. A fourth way we want to talk about, to rank high in search engines is to actually pay for your traffic. The fastest way to get on page 1 of any search engine is to buy the traffic in the form of a pay per click advertising campaign.

Although this will not technically rank you high, you will be on page 1 and then getting traffic in a matter of minutes when you set up a campaign for example with Google Adwords. This can be expensive, so be careful not to overstep your bounds before you’re aware of exactly what you are doing.

Organic traffic is better than paid traffic because searchers look at the organic websites first, and because the cost is substantially less to you as an advertiser. Hopefully these three ways to rank in search engines as well as the pay per click way will be helpful to you.
